BIOETHICISTS WITHOUT BORDERS
STATEMENT
DECLARATION OF "BIOETHICISTS WITHOUT BORDERS" REFLECTING THE RECENT WAR
IN EASTERN EUROPE
We, bioethicists from all over the world, in sympathy with the victims of the current military aggression in Eastern
Europe, affirm the principles of the fathers of bioethics – Fritz Jahr and Van Renssealer Potter – and totally agree about the following:
1. War is a part of Bios (like many other „negative” phenomena man has practiced), but it is also a negation of Bios.
Bioethics primarily is love for Bios, thus disdaining any form or degree of war. There is no „justful “, „preventive “, or „defensive“ war: there is only war which should entirely be abandoned as the wrong way of communication between individuals, groups, religions, and nations.
2. Absent of outright war, there are many situations where we can and must compromise, negotiate, discuss, and accept other ways of conduct and the rich multitude of cultures among families, friends, religions,
businesses, as this is our complex human nature, broadening the differences between war and peace.
3. Other players, such as states, religions, international and national laws, United Nations are important mediators.
Some cultures want to be left alone and we should respect such behavior even though we would not follow them, as long as they don't kill or suppress or make war. War should not only be limited by international treaties: it should be prohibited in the name of reason and ethics and the bioethical care for our globe and worlds. We do believe, that economic, military, or cultural sanctions against a nation can result in anything else but new injustice.
4. National borders have often been formed in accordance to a so-called natural „right “of the stronger.
We most severely condemn every attempt at imposing by force anyone's will and political choice.
5. We invite bioethicists to transcend the phase of bioethical theory and start living bioethics - that is, in this case, to actively promote peace without borders.
